Google Alerts and Analytics
I recently discovered some fun tricks offered by Google. For starters, I signed up for Google Alerts. Why? Because I can have 'alerts' delivered to my email box anytime my name, book title or website pops up on the Internet. To sign up, go to: http://www.google.com/alerts. It's easy. Simply follow the instructions. Be sure and use quotations (" ") to limit the searches. For example for my name, I signed up by typing "allyn evans". Minus the quotation marks, I would be alerted about every Evans, for example, on the Internet. Of course, if your name is common, you will sometimes be notified of other folks making headlines or news.
And Google Analytics
It's the solution to tracking statistics for your blog. It's free and fun! My favorite feature is the map of the world featuring all locations of first-time or returning visitors. Signing up is easy! First, create an account on Google. Then select Analytics. The instructions are simple (similar to working with www.blogger.com). If you decide to add to your website, you'll need a little HTML knowledge.
